Coming to Lagos? All you need to know about Life in Lagos!

If you haven’t been living under a rock, you must have heard a thing or two about Africa’s most populated city, Lagos. The narratives we see on the news and read in the papers maybe different from what is applicable on ground, depending on who is telling the story, but either way, they serve as a guide to put us through.

Coming to LagosAs one living in Lagos myself, I’ll share with you some things you need to know about life here – you’ll learn a thing or two if you are new here or planning to move here.

1. It’s a city for all

Most cities around the world are known to accommodate a certain class of people – these cities are known as “their” city, and everyone else is a stranger – that’s not Lagos. This place is literally a place for all. It sounds unbelievable to an extent, but living here, I’ve come to realize that where one is from, is never an issue – it hardly comes up in general dealings and conversations.

2. Everyone lives here

You have probably heard that Lagos is overcrowded, yes it is. But don’t be scared, that in itself, isn’t such a bad thing. People have lived here ever since, and they have found a way to get around the crowd.

The mainland is the more crowded place as accommodation in that area is more affordable unlike the posh Lagos Island. For one who lives on the Island, you don’t have to worry about the crowd as it is less crowded and more conducive. If you can afford it, Lagos Island is the way to go.

3. Bubbly night life

If you are type that likes a city that hardly sleeps, then “Eko” as Lagos is fondly called by indigenes and settlers, is a place for you. After the running around in the day, a new chapter of activities opens up at night. There are the night markets, where virtually everything is sold. For workers who are busy during the day and can’t go to the market, these markets are life savers because they can buy whatever they want to buy, on their way back from work. The shopping malls aren’t exempted; you can do some shopping at night too.

4. Variety of food

A “city for all” like Lagos, caters to the food needs of everyone. Whether you are from other parts of Nigeria or another African country or Western country, you can be rest assured that finding what you will eat, won’t be a problem. Markets and grocery stores in Lagos have both local and foreign food stuff if you want to do the cooking yourself, and there several restaurants that make local and intercontinental dishes if you want to eat out.

5. Opportunities

Lagos is a city of opportunities. Being the commercial hub of Africa, it has helped many people achieve their dreams and rise to financial independence. There are opportunities in different industries. The word “hustle” is very common here - it simply means working hard. If you are hardworking and determined, you will succeed.

These are some pointers about living in Lagos. Lest I forget, it’s important to “shine your eyes” in this city i.e be careful and at alert. Like in other big cities, there are people who are up to no good and are looking for preys. There’s no need to panic – just be mindful of how you interact with strangers, always be on the lookout and mind your business. The advantages of living in Lagos far outweigh the disadvantages. You are welcome to Eko.
