5 Essential Rules for a Successful and Safe One-Night Stand

When you're out and about for the night, you either go hard or go home. A great one-night stand begins from the moment you step out of your door. The choices you make determine how the night turns out. If you meet someone you fancy and want to have some fun with them, you must play by the rules. You aren't looking for a lover or a long-term partner, so you must act the part.

Here's how to have the best one-night stand every single time:

1. Stay Sober and In Control

Whatever happens that night, you have to be able to remember it. You won't be able to do that if you're drunk. You are meeting up with a stranger you can't trust, no matter how good-looking or nice they appear to be. It's in your best interest to stay sober because if you’re drunk, someone could take advantage of you.

When you're intoxicated, you don't have much control over your actions. You don't want to struggle to remember things in a potentially strange environment. If you’re sober, you stand a better chance of taking action if the need arises. On the other hand, if you’re drunk, you’ll be at the person's mercy and unable to stand up for yourself. If you're at a party and intend to have a one-night stand, ensure you don't get drunk. You want to be alert, in control, and able to remember every detail.

2. Prioritize Protection

This person is a complete stranger to you, and you have no idea about their sexual history. Going in without protection isn’t cool at all; you could get yourself into a serious mess. There's no guarantee the other person will have protection, so you need to bring your own.

If you’re going out and think you might be up for a hookup, carry a condom with you. You don't want to get into the moment and realize none is available, as you might get carried away and proceed anyway. Prioritize your health. Being sober helps here too; if you’re alert, you can insist that nothing happens unless both of you use protection.

3. Avoid Over-Sharing Personal Information

Understand that this is a one-night stand, not a date. Now isn’t the time to talk about yourself or let the person know how awesome you are. You’re there for a hookup, so stick to the memo. When you share too much, you give that person power over you without any emotional connection.

Why share personal details with someone who might not be in your life after tonight? Stick to what’s important for the moment. If you must have a conversation, keep it about what is happening right now. Don’t over-share because there’s a risk that details could be used against you or for blackmail. Focus on the fun you want to have.

4. Maintain Personal Hygiene

You might not see this person again, but you still want to make a good impression. You don’t want to be remembered as the person with a foul smell. If you’ve been out all day, take a shower before getting in bed to wash away sweat and odors.

If you’re staying at someone else’s place, consider your breath. Your host might not have an extra toothbrush, but you should at least ask for mouthwash. You don't want to get in bed with a smelly mouth; that’s gross. How are they supposed to kiss you? Ensure you’re clean and smelling good so that the person you're hooking up with can enjoy the moment. Leaving a bad impression is not cool at all.

5. Don’t Overstay Your Welcome

You need to know when to leave, especially if you aren’t at your own place. The other person might not want to be rude and ask you to leave; they might just be waiting for you to go on your own. Don't stay past morning. While you shouldn’t disappear in the middle of the night if it isn't safe, you should leave once morning comes.

Let the person know you’re heading out. If they want you to stay longer, they’ll ask. If you stay without making a move to leave, you might give the impression that you want a relationship or something more. It was just a one-night stand; they don't owe you anything. Once it’s morning, make your move. This ensures you aren't staying against their will and prevents sending the wrong message.

A one-night is meant to be fun. Nonetheless, you have to be careful and stay safe. Don't put yourself or anyone else in a difficult situation. Always prioritize your safety because that's paramount.
