Self-love: How to love yourself unconditionally

In a world where isolation is detrimental to a happy living, we need each other for co-existence. What others have to say about you becomes somewhat imperative in how you lead your life. There are set standards, mostly unwritten, which we are expected to conform to, regardless of our individual preferences and lifestyles. But when you live your life based on people’s standards, what happens to the real you? There lies a conflict between self-love and fitting in.

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? A reflection of yourself. In the same light, when people look at you, they see that person whom you’ve created.

Realizing that you were created by a beautiful God, in his beautiful image, is the first step to self-love and acceptance. Everything He created is beautiful, and you, being one of his creations, is nothing less than beautiful. Your existence in itself is not a rushed project, but orchestrated, skillfully, like a beautiful creation by a renowned Artist.

It’s human nature to feel a void, a longing to fill an incompleteness that is either real or imagined. And this is as a result of our fears of how others perceive us. You need to, first of all, realize that perfection, in its true sense, doesn’t exist, so those who expect you to be perfect are being delusional, and that should be their problem, not yours.

If everybody and everything in life were perfect, where would the intrigue lie? The predictability, in itself, would be boring. You don’t have to be show-glass material. You know why? No one is truly that. Deep down, we all have our demons and insecurities we are battling, you aren’t alone.

Do to the people you come across, what you’d want them to do to you. If you want to receive love, you must learn to give love. But when you love, and your love isn’t returned, you need to understand that you aren’t the problem, they are. There’s no point in making excuses for people who do not value you. Self-love is best experienced when you let go of people who clearly don’t appreciate you even after you’ve been kind to them. Trying too hard to win their love and seek their approval reeks of low self-esteem and a struggle with self-acceptance.

While you are on a mission to loving yourself and others, remember that everybody mustn’t love you, and it’s normal. Even Christ himself, the savior of the world, wasn’t loved by all, let alone you, a mere mortal. Enjoying moments with people who care about you and ignoring others who don’t, are part of the necessities in this journey called life.
