Love not returned is one that’s incomplete. It’s one-sided and not shared. What is supposed to be beautiful, becomes a source of pain, because your love interest, uninterested, denies you the opportunity of exploring the bits of what you feel towards them. But then, life is not a romantic flick, with a perfectly written plot of happy endings. Sometimes, feelings are not mutual, and really, you can’t blame anyone for not giving you what you expect of them. The best you can do is to master the art of dealing with unreturned love or affection amicably.

Five Practical Ways to Deal with Unreturned Love or Affection

Don’t be hard on yourself

Falling in love isn’t a crime. Regardless of the circumstances, you don’t have to treat yourself like one who has done something wrong. You aren’t guilty. You are a victim, a victim of love. So, stop blaming yourself already. You aren’t a robot who can stop feeling what you feel at the switch of a button. You need time to get over this.

Understand that love isn’t by compulsion

While you may not control who your heart beats for, there’s no guarantee that it’ll be mutual. If they don’t feel the same way about you, then you have to live with that, with the hope that someday, you’ll meet someone who would be crazy about you. Don’t try to lure or entice someone into loving you, it could be a disaster. Save yourself the troubles.

Get active

You are probably sweating over it because you have plenty of spare time on your hands. Get up and get your mind preoccupied. If you have a job, now is the time to work harder. If you are at school, now is the time for you to study harder. Or better still, invest your time in your hobbies. This will greatly help you to deal with unreturned love or affection because you won’t have time to think about the person or situation anymore.

Cut contact with the person

In order to heal from this experience, you need to lose any form of contact with the individual in question. And that’s because seeing them is a reminder of the incident, and might reawaken unwanted feelings. Give them a long distance until you are completely healed. This is not to say that you should be hostile towards them, avoid them nicely.

Exercise often

Working-out is a good way to relieve yourself of negative energy. It loosens the muscles, making your body feel lighter. Don’t sleep in bed all day, lost in the sadness of your pity party. Get your shoes on and work it!

Don’t deal with unreturned love or affection by being mean towards the person in question because they don’t feel the same way about you, that’s immature and inconsiderate. Matters of the heart are not forced, they happen naturally. True love isn’t hateful. If it isn’t mutual, it’s an indication you two aren’t made for each other.
