No matter how big your wardrobe is, if you keep buying more clothes without getting rid of the old ones, you will run out of space. A jampacked wardrobe isn't easy to deal with. Sorting through clothes becomes even more difficult. Decluttering helps you create space and keep things in order.
Here's what to do:
1. Detach Your Emotions From Your Clothing
Leave your emotions at the door. One of the biggest hurdles people face when decluttering is the emotional attachment they have to their items, clothes, and shoes.
Since you have had those items for a while, you've probably developed emotional attachments to them. It might be difficult for you to just discard that, but you need to understand it is what it is. You need space in your wardrobe because a full wardrobe makes it difficult to keep things organized.
All that clutter can be off-putting, especially if you're the kind of person who likes to organize things properly. You need to see this as any other job: a task you need to do. You aren't doing it just because you want to, you're doing it because you need it.
If you don't create room, how are you going to have more stuff? Besides, you've used some of those items for a while, and it's time for you to let them go. You have to be objective about it. If you could just get your emotions out of the way, decluttering wouldn't be so difficult after all.
2. Decide the Fate of Your Unwanted Items
You need to understand that you aren't doing anything wrong by decluttering. If anything, you're doing a good thing.
First, you could decide to give them to someone. You probably know somebody who would appreciate those clothes or shoes. Giving those items would make their day and put a smile on their face.
If you don't have anybody to give them to, you could sell them and make some money. You'd put some money in your pocket, which is a good thing. You could also just give them out to charity.
If you decide what you'll do with those items, getting rid of them will be easier. You would understand that just because those items are leaving your wardrobe, it doesn't mean you're losing. If you give them away, you're gaining by doing something good for someone else.
3. Set a Specific Number of Items to Remove
A lot of the time, you might actually not want to remove anything if you like all your clothes. You might not even find five items to remove because you fancy them all.
You need to pick a number, such as twenty items. This could be five shirts, ten pants, or ten skirts. When you pick specific numbers, you're guided.
You'll know that no matter what happens, you'll pick five shirts to discard. Keep going until you meet the numbers you've set aside. Those numbers will motivate you even when you feel attached to the items.\
When you reach that number, you'll feel so accomplished. You'll feel like you've done something really good. Don't make the mistake of starting without picking specific numbers, as that would only slow you down.
4. Target Items You Hardly Wear
You probably have several items that you haven't worn in a long time. This should make the job easier, so start with those.
They should be at the top of your list. If you haven't worn them in a while, it could be that you don't really fancy them or don't have places to wear them. Why leave them in your wardrobe, where they're just taking up space?
Create room for the items that you actually wear. Those items should hang comfortably in your wardrobe. If you haven't worn an item in a long time, it shouldn't be in your wardrobe in the first place.
Some people need those items even more. You bought them to wear them, not to just hang them there. They are of no use to you, so you're better off without them.
5. Remove Anything That Doesn't Fit Properly
The fifth tip is to select items that don't fit. Items that don't accentuate your body have no business in your wardrobe. You should only wear clothes and shoes that make you look your best.
If a piece of clothing doesn't make you look your best, why should you even wear it? You need to strive for perfection when you dress up. Any item that is less than that should be at the top of your list to get rid of.
If it doesn't fit, it shouldn't make your list of items that stay. You need to get it out as soon as possible. Following these steps will help you successfully declutter.
