President
of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan has signed the Same Sex
Marriage (Prohibition) Bill 2013 into law.
Despite
pressure from the international community for the Bill not to see the light of
day, the President went ahead to sign the Bill which states that gays in
Nigeria stand the chance of serving a 14 year jail term if they get married.
The
Bill also states that anybody who is directly or indirectly a part of any gay
clubs, societies and organizations stands the chance of serving 10 years
imprisonment. And anyone who stands as a witness or aid the joining together of
same sex in marriage will also serve 10 years imprisonment.
